Second Chances: Continuing Education Students in San Jose

Over the past few months, I have had the privilege of working with the continuing and alternative education high schools of the East Side Union High School District in San Jose. These schools exist to give students who left high school a genuine second chance to finish.

Along the way, I met young people who persevered through emotional, physical, and financial hardship to reach the finish line, and the dedicated staff who offered the guidance, encouragement, and tough love that helped them get there.

Homelessness. Teen pregnancy. Involvement with the juvenile justice system. Having to work to support a family. These are some of the realities students at Foothill High School (Continuing Education) navigate every day. And yet, so many of them choose resilience over defeat, returning to school with determination, courage, and hope for a better future.

I am proud that the Sinha Foundation is supporting scholarships and merit-based awards for 36 students across four continuing education high schools in the district, recognizing those who have shown extraordinary perseverance in continuing their education despite personal hardship and setbacks. Their strength, and their commitment to building a brighter future, is truly inspiring.
