From a Tin Shed to New Possibilities: A School, A Dream, A Future

During our recent trip to India, we had the opportunity to visit Chandan Nagar and spend time with the dedicated staff of Ashraya, a visit that brought the mission of the Sinha Foundation to life in a deeply personal and powerful way.

The Sinha Foundation is proud to support Ashraya’s work with approximately 2,400 residents of this community, including 400 children and youth and 2,000 adults, many of whom work primarily as waste pickers.

A School That Begins with Hope

One of the most meaningful moments of our visit was standing at the site where a new school will soon be built.

For now, children are starting their educational journey in a makeshift tin shed, a temporary space that represents a beginning: a place where children can gather, learn, and imagine possibilities beyond the circumstances into which they were born.

After the monsoon rains, construction will begin on a new facility with four classrooms and restrooms. While it may seem like a modest structure, we know its impact will extend far beyond the building itself.

Seeing What Is Possible

We also visited Ashraya’s flagship school, which serves students from nursery through Grade 10. We had the opportunity to meet the students and educators who are helping make this transformation possible every day.

The flagship school allowed us to see not only what Ashraya has accomplished, but also what may be possible for the children we had just met in Chandan Nagar.

In many ways, it felt like seeing the future.

A Family Experience That Deepened Our Purpose

This visit was especially meaningful as our family had the opportunity to experience it together. Seeing both communities created a powerful connection between where these children are today and where they could be tomorrow.

At the Sinha Foundation, we believe philanthropy is not simply about funding a program or constructing a building. It is about investing in human potential. It is about recognizing that talent is everywhere, even when opportunity is not.

The Journey Ahead

We left Pune with a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude: for the opportunity to partner with Ashraya, for the dedication of its staff and educators, and most importantly, for the children whose energy, curiosity, and potential reminded us why this work matters.

At the Sinha Foundation, we are honored to be part of that journey.
